The first statement is generally true, because different email
clients interpret HTML email differently (some fail totally, like
older versions of Internet Mail).
The second statement is a bit silly; correct me if I'm wrong, but
wasn't HTML email introduced by Netscape? Every single Windows email
client that I can think of supports HTML email, and has done so for a
very long time. Microsoft wanted us to use RTF for rich formatting in
emails, but had to ditch that idea when Internet open standards
prevailed.
Although I think it's a bad idea to send HTML email to a list such as
this, with a number of people using text-only email readers, HTML in
email can be useful. A friend of mine has written a really neat modem
testing program in Perl (yes, running on Linux) that will decipher
modem diagnostics and output the result in an HTML table that gets
emailed back to whoever requested the diagnostics.
> That is why a majority of e-mail lists BAN the use of HTML e-mail.
The Red Hat list doesn't, AFAIK. A simple "please don't use HTML when
sending to the list" would have been enough. Flaming newcomers to the
list is counterproductive and represents behaviour that IMO should be
banned from the list.
