Problem is solved. The reason i got that "kernel panic" message and the
system halted when trying to boot from the installation diskette was that i
erroneously specified the root partition as hda2 rather than hdb1. Silly
error. (But newbies are like that, i guess.) Thanks to everyone who sent a
tip. I hope to know enough soon to start repaying soon.
