Any respectable Unix/Linux book should cover this. I have one that is a
pretty
good starting point for new Linux users, it is called:
Linux Programming
Written by: Neil Matthew & Richard Stones
Published by: Wrox
I got the book thru a research proffessor but you can probably
get it thru Amazon.com at a good price. (The cover price says
$36.95, which is great for the amount of info in the book)
It covers:
File System
Shell Programming
Files
Unix Environment
Processes & Signals (the best of any book I have seen yet)
Inter-process comm.
Semaphores, queues and Shared Mem
Sockets (also the best of any book I have seen)
X programming (not a great section)
CGI Programming (nothing to great)
Debugging
Curses
I probably have 15 Linux/Unix books and this is by far the best. Stay away
from the 'Unleashed' books (Although I noticed a Red Hat Unleashed book
that I have yet to take a look at) and take a good look at any Que books you
buy. (There are some good ones and real crappy ones)
But, if you have the time, you can always find anything a book has out on
the
net somewhere for free. And also, stuff you find on the web will probably be
a lot more recent. I know threads have undergone major changes in the last
three years and by the time a book was published and shipped, the info was
out of date. I had an operating systems class that the instructor would get
technical
docs from a buddy of his at Sun at that would be our text. Unfortunately,
the
thread community went to POSIX.
Oh well,
That book is a great book. I would rank it as beginner to intermediate but I
have
seen several experienced admins use it for refernce.
