It's not set up to do it that way. You can change it to do that if you
want.

'xterm' is not exactly the same thing as a shell. It's an X
representation of a terminal -- somewhat similar to a 'DOS box' in other
DOS-based operating systems wherein one can type command lines and/or
run character-mode programs.

A shell is like command.com running in the xterm, or in Linux, could be
any one of bash, tcsh, ksh, csh, zsh, and so forth.

For xterms, there are programs like rxvt, nxterm, and some others.

Because of the way Linux handles memory, it is better perhaps to settle
on one of these rather than to use different ones. It's better from a
memory standpoint to have 3 xterms open than to have one rxvt, one
nxterm and one something else, because the common parts of these
programs share the same memory areas. This may be part of the reason why
the default is to use xterm (nxterm, actually, in Red Hat) and not to
offer a submenu.

Not that I know of. I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but possibly one
wouldn't want to do that. If you want to get into the nitty - gritty of
what files gets read and what options you have to disable/enable some of
this stuff you might want to message me or someone else directly.

I'm pretty sure you need to configure xfm.

know to be text. >4. Can the control panel be resized so that all

I think so, but I'm not sure how to go about doing it.

Not that I know of - get the sources and fix it. :) Xemacs, though, puts
the scroll bar on the right, and some prefer xemacs to emacs, and you
could just grab the xemacs rpms and use them in place of the emacs rpms
if you wish.

"Your text is >probably too wide" What does this mean? and how can I get

I haven't encountered that one before.

Sometimes these are good to just put in a command line, or to display
logs or status messages in.

Because the xfm and the bash running inside the xterm (and the xterm
itself) are separate processes (programs) each with their own copy of
what's called the environment, where certain things, such as working
directory, are stored. So, once you change something inside one
process's environment, all the other processes aren't going to have
their environments change as well.

I don't see why. Can you elaborate?

Only if the floppy has already been formatted with an ext2 filesystem.
In DOS, physical formatting (checking for bad blocks and laying down
tracks etc.) and logical formatting (laying down a filesystem) are done
at the same time, by the same program (FORMAT),. because in DOS, there's
only one filesystem. In Linux, there are many choices, including no
filesystem at all, so these are separate processes.
