I have just attempted to install Slackware from CD-ROM. Most programs
seemed to install, but I did get considerable errors. Also, I can't boot up
into Linux via the floppy...so obviously, something is not kosher. Here are
the errors:
===begin list of errors
---------
DURING PACKAGE "A" INSTALL:
Error installing package /var/adm/mount/slakware/a9/txtutils.tgz
An error has occured while installing this package. Setup
will attempt to continue anyway, but this is possibly a
SERIOUS ERROR that may cause you problems later on. It is
recommended that you make sure the package is not corrupted
and then reinstall. If you obtained the package via FTP, be
sure to use 'binary' mode for both the transfer and download
of the package.
Here is the actual error message (if any):
tar (child): read error on - : I/O error
compress: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF on archive file
tar: child returned status 1
---------
Error installing package /var/adm/mount/slakware/a9/util.tgz

---------
DURING PACKAGE "N" INSTALL:
For a brief moment--too brief for me to read entire line--at bottom of
screen appeared a statement beginning with: "No such..." What was the rest
of the line? This error appreared right before the procmail install routine.
---------
DURING PACKAGE "XAP" INSTALL:

===end list of errors
Except for the package N install, the Linux screen scrolled a verbose list
of statements that came in repetitions of similar blocks, like so:
sbpcd-0 [65]: sbp_data: CDi_status loop expired
sbpcd-0 [66]: sbp_data: CDistatus timeout (timed_out_data) (FB).
sbpcd-0 [67]: sbp_data: read aborted by drive
sbpcd-0 [68]: !st_diskok detected - retrying.
sbpcd-0 [69]: !st_diskok detected - retrying.
sbpcd-0 [70]: !st_diskok detected - retrying.
sbpcd-0 [71]: sbp_status: failed after 3 tries.
end_requiest: I/O error, dev 19:00, sector 18992
With each block, there were increments of the number between the square
brackers...and the sector number at end of block, would also increment.
The following packages installed with no errors: E, F, T, X, XV and Y.
The CD-ROM is from CheapBytes, and is the lastest version of Slackware.
What the heck is going on? I really don't care to repeat the horrible mess
RedHat 5.0's installation turned out to be. Slackware's installation
process seems a lot more user friendly...but now this!
