Hi there,

I having a strange problem when using xdm as
the startup for X11.

I use fvwm2 as window manager. After configuring my
.fvwm2rc and installing it in my root and user accounts,
I started to launch the Window manager by modifiing
the /etc/inittab file and choosing the mode 5, in order
to launch X11 with xdm instead of typing"startx" all
the time. But, when I go to the menus defined by
.fvwm2rc and choose "Quit fvwmrc", I get stucked, the
screen becomes black and the machine is blocked (completely
freezed and without reaction). Then, I must turn off and turn on
the machine again (my computer doesn't have a reset button and
control-al-del is also blocked). When
running startx, nothing of this happens. So, for the
moment I got back to "startx". My .Xclients file
is a very simple one and has just

 "#!/bin/tcsh
  xterm -geometry &
  exec fvwm2 "

It's very boring, beacause after having the machine blocked, I must
turn of the machine and turn it on again. This happenned with redhat
with the errata upgrades for X11, glibc and other things done.

2 - Actually this last operation is very dangerous and it destroyed
a few files, so I decided to reinstall from scratch RedHat 5.0. Usually,
I use tcsh, but I decided to stay in bash. Once everything done, X11 works,
and I decided to launch xdm by changiung to mode 5 in inittab. I managed
to make a few logouts without problems (by cliking always in the
Quit button of the fvwmrc file), but I got back to the same freezing
problems of before. Result : I got back to startx. This time, I didn't make
the upgrades. A curious thing : sometimes, when a blanck screen starts
(after some minutes without work), a reboot takes place as a result of an
X11 crash caused by this. But I believe this point can disappear with the X11
upgrades (i will do it today).

Please, has anyone experienced something similar? I really don't know
what to do, so any help will be very welcome !!

Cheers
