Marc.,

Ingres is a fully relational, heavyweight database capable of storing
very large volumes of data (I have worked with up to 100GB of data with
50 users online on an 18-way Squent machine without ill effect!).

It supports full error recovery with its log file, selectable data
storage structures (hash, isam, btree, heap) for its tables, has all mthe
main data types (float8, float4, int, char, varchar, etc) and I find it
an efficient, good, resource-light product that is capable of serious,
heavyweight processing.

It is SQL based, and has a preprocessor enabling embedded SQL in loads of
languages, a GUI front end if you want it (OpenRoad), an archaic terminal
mode forms system if you want to use it, a 4GL, the latest versions
support direct WEB access, Java, etc. But Ingres is not cheap and it is
owned by Computer Associates (CA).

However, Ingres DID evolve out of a university project by Michael
Stonebraker and there ARE freeware products based on it (University
Ingres and PostgreSQL being the most popular)

I have nominated to go with PostgreSQL because it is an object oriented
database based on Ingres. Ingres++, really. It supports JDBC access
(Java), ODBC access (of course)), embedded SQL in C and many other
strong, good features. Go to: http://www.postgreSQL.org and have a browse
around the site for more detailed info. It's worth the visit!

I believe that both PostgreSQL and Ingres, due to their ease of
connectivity across networks and/or via the oprating system (JDBC, ODBC,
terminal montior, embedded SQL in C code, etc) make for EXCELLENT
database back ends for WEB projects.

I have used Ingres for almost 10 years now and have no doubt in my mind
about it, however, I have only recently started to delve into PostgreSQL.
>From what I have seen, it is very good. Put it this way: I'm basing my
ecommerce site that I am developing on it!

I am not certain about your options with commercial Ingres on Linux,
although I know that University Ingres is availble for it. Personally, I
would say go with Postgresql.

You should have no problems accessing Postgresql from Access via ODBC
provided that you have a decent windows ODBC driver. Openlink supply
pretty good ODBC drivers for windows. I've used their drivers
extensively. http://www.openlink.co.uk/

I hope that this helps. Feel free to email me again if you have further
queries or want to remain in touch if you go the Postgresql route and
need some questions answered.

Regards,

Brad
