My weapon of choice is Partition Magic for something like that. No need
to backup (well, at least in theory. I've never had a problem YMMV) :)
I think that there's also a partitioning utility that you can get at the
slackware site (I think) that will let you non-destructively resize the
partition. I've never tried it.
Failing all of that, you could always backup the entire DOS partition
and use the Linux fdisk to hack away at things.
But I'd suggest using Partition Magic since this probably *won't* be the
last time you do this. :)
