I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 Wide-Screen model and it works
beautifully. There are a few minor issues that need some whacking with the
proverbial hammer to get running, but they aren't going to ruin your day.

The first issue is the Wide-Screen. It takes some tweaks to get X to
fill it up properly.

The Second is the APCI, but there is a compiled as well as source
RPM kernel floating around on the net you can grab, made specifically for
this Laptop.

I am unable to say whether or not the modem works. I haven't used a
modem for anything other then dialing into a phone system for some
administrative tasks in something like 4 years. (That particular phone admin
interface software only runs in Windows anyway.)

The other thing that doesn't work is the built-in WiFi card.
Apparently it is used in Military Applications and can pick-up Military
communications, which is why the specs for it haven't been released by the
chip manufacturer for Open Source developers to get it running. (No, it's
not the Intel Centrino technology.) However, with that bit of knowledge out,
apparently a number of hackers have been making it their mission to put
together drivers for that chipset, even by attempting to reverse the Windows
drivers. Hopefully, one of them will have the wisdom to release a driver
with ONLY the abilities present in the official Windows driver, for those of
us that have no interest in listening to or intercepting military
transmissions. (I wouldn't want to have the potential for getting into any
hot water that I didn't knowingly get into myself.)

Other then that, everything else works. From the sound to the 3D
acceleration using the Nvidia drivers, if you choose the GeForce4Go video
adapter. (I don't know about the ATI choice, but supposedly it works too..)

        Later,
        Rob
