It's best to use MailScanner's update_virus_scanners utility then run the
one that comes with F-Prot.  The update_virus_scanners will be already
installed in /etc/cron.hourly so don't run the F-Prot version too.

The MailScanner version has a number of enhancements (file locking,
timeout protection, etc).
