Both are RedHat Boxes. Sometimes different versions, but I have gone same version to same version over the same link with the same results.

Are both systems running Linux? I have seen lots of issues between various implementations of scp (which is basically what sftp uses). Sometimes performance is great and sometimes it really sucks, depending on who the client and server are.
