I have a system on a 500 k I-net conxn. When I transfer files via ftp the
entire bandwidth is used and the transfer is as expected. However, when
using sftp the packets seem to send and arrive in little segments separated
by what seems to be about a second and a half to two seconds and the
bandwidth is down to about a quarter or less of the 500k avail. Running top
I can see the processor is idle 98% or so. I could understand the overhead
being high for the encryption would make the limiting factor the speed at
which the processor can work the encryption, but since the processor is
basically free, why wouldn't the file transfer take up the available
bandwidth? Has anyone experienced this? Anyone know of a hack to improve
the performance?
