If whatever it is that you're trying to install is supported in RH8 it's 
probably best to start out with the RH8 distributed/updated version.  
If you use up2date (Red Hat Network) that will do all the dependency 
checks, download, and install everything you need to support your new 
software automagically. 

If, on the other hand, you're trying to install something that isn't 
distributed with RH8 then it can be a bit of a muddle.  I don't think 
you ever said which software you're trying to install.  Perhaps if you 
let everyone know what it is, then someone may have already crossed the 
bridge with that software and let you know the best way to handle it.
