Late to the thread but be careful with which windows you are running XP home for instance cannot IIRC log into, join or whatever it is called, a domain.
Having read the docs...I don't want a domain. I mean, come on: I have _two_ computers here, reaching _one_ server, and wanting to print; there is really no way in hell that this can require something as onerous, ancient, top-heavy, and inflexible as an MS domain. Yuck!
I'll try some other stuff tonight and post back later; two or three people have written off-list with what looks like good advice.
