Did you also upgrade those applications in question? Sounds to me like a library incompatibility. It's possible that you upgraded many of the base and Gnome packages, but forgot/disabled the KDE/other stuff. When you try to run those apps, they were linked to the older RH8 library versions which are likely incompatible.
