A couple of things come to mind. If this were my problem, I'd leave it alone and schedule a replacement box with a lean installation for the near future. Barring that, get familiar with the whatprovides, redhatprovide and other switches to rpm to see what dependencies you will need to account for when de-X-ing the host. Another is to use setup. I haven't tried this, but I definitely would investigate as it manages dependencies quite nicely. Experiment on a box that is not production to get a feel for the behaviour of "setup".
