Yes - you can, install as much as you need (installing "all' is very
tedious and is much more than you will need.), and set your initial 
run level to level 3.  This will start you in text mode on the cosole
with six virtual consoles available at the same time.
(Alt-F1 thru Alt-F6).

You can change your run level permanently in /etc/inittab or one-time
per use with the telinit command.
