On my RH7.3 system as well as on my MDK9.1 system, all that was needed
was adding "alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx" to /etc/modules.conf. I
DO, however, have an initrd, as both systems are SCSI only. Have you
tried making one just to try it?
