redhat network

I was wondering when I do a up2date on my 7.2 system my kernel does not 
change in the number. It is still at version 2.3.. but when the rpm 
headers are fetched I get a message that says: "The following Packages 
were marked to be skipped by your configuration:  Kernel    2.4.20 ...
So have I selected something that is preventing a kernel update or is 
there something else I am running that is preventing the update? 
Shouldn't I be updating to the latest kernel?
