Hardware wise, everything checks out. BIOS wise, everything checks out. And I did try re-installing grub again, but that didn't help either. As it is, this is fast becoming a moot point since the replacement drive is in and the machine boots as it should again. Once again, let me make it clear: there is absolutely NOTHING on hdb1. I created the partition and formatted it, nothing else. Now Grub boots again. As soon as I disconnect the drive (and update the BIOS,) grub fails.
