I've been considering whether or not to purchase a year's worth of Red Hat Network. Is it worth it? Being able to update my system at any time with just a push of a button would be nice, but is there a cheaper (A/K/A - free) alternative?

There _are_ free alternatives; look into apt and its GUI synaptic.

However, I suggest that you consider (a) whether you can afford $5/month and (b) whether you want to use this as a tool to support Red Hat which is, after all, a for-profit company who hopes to make a profit. If you believe that the benefits you get from Red Hat are worth that $5/month, I urge you to "vote with your dollar" and help them be more successful.

Of course, if you _don't_ believe they provide such a service, spend your hard-earned money elsewhere. It's just that I believe saving $1000 on Windows 2000 licenses every time I add a server, and the rock-solid stability of my RH servers, is more than worth the $5/month... I think it's a screaming bloody bargain.

Remember: you asked whether it was WORTH IT. My answer: hell, yes!

Here, here. Yes, you could find free alternatives. Yes, you could keep a demo account for each RH box (and answer a survey every 6 months to keep it going), but remember, "free" as in speech, not as in beer. Red Hat is in business to make money, and they offer this service at a very competitive price (hell, when you compare costs to Microsoft, the small RH fees are almost nonexistent). Red Hat products are part of my "tool chest" used for making money, so I think it's only fitting that they get paid for the service they provide me.
