*** Think about your blood pressure Rodolfo. Free as in "Free beer" can be a valid choice. Payment doesn't imply quality (I can't believe I have to say this!) as a well know Company very "dear" to us confirms every day. If ClamAV is free and McAfee is not I will by my very human nature try out ClamAV. In fact I prefer free software (both as in free speech and free beer) because - most of the time - it has turned out to be of better quality than their commercial counterparts.
You missed a line in my quote, Zoran. The sentence said: "You want more and better software, be prepared to shell out some cash SOMETIMES" [emphasis added] . I have no problem with software either "libre" (as in speech) or "gratis" (as in beer); in fact, I depend upon it a great deal, appreciate and support the philosophical model that gave it life, and use lots of gratis software because it's either better than commercial, or I can't pay for the commercial.
The reason I jumped on this guy was (a) I was probably having a bad day and was short of patience; and (b) because I really am sick of people who _expect_ all software to be gratis, shun anyone who does not offer their creations free of charge, and in short want life handed to them on a silver platter with beluga caviar. From previous posts in the thread and past history, I concluded that his "but payment!" one-liner was a morally indignant throwing-up-of-hands as in "Oh, how horrible... how can those nasty people even _think_ about charging money for software?"
My message to the OP was: "Rejoice that software libre and/or gratis exists, and be grateful whenever you receive the gift that is software libre and/or gratis. However, do not expect all things in life to be libre or gratis, and in fact remember that many people or companies _must_ charge for their coding efforts since that is how they feed their families. It is not possible for everything to be free, so quit whining that one particular package costs money. You don't want to pay, that's a valid choice; but don't make commercial software (libre or not) out to be a crime against nature since by doing so you cause harm to the rest of us."
Hopefully now you better understand what I meant before. I stand by my comments.
Cheers,
