Hi Karma. I'm a newbie but for what it's worth I recently tried to upgrade from 7.2 to 9.0. I didn't have such severe problems as you seem to be having - it seemed to upgrade fine - but I soon ran into many strange problems like users getting logged out involuntarily. A sys-admin finally told me that upgrading from 7.x to 9.0 is known to be problematic and instead one should do a fresh install. It was a pain to reinstall all my data and 3rd party software but all the strange problems went away.
Good luck.
