Hi "ste"

And if you simply want to blindly update everything on the system, do
    up2date -i -u -f
-ste

Is this safe? Doesnt sound like it...We only have apache mysql and nessus running on this system
(plus whatever defaults to a standard RH9 without GUI installation)

Also, what about updating the Kernel to 2.4x, does this mean I have to reinstall/compile packages I have installed? If no why has my configuration elected to "skip" the installation of these in up2date?

I've always run stock RH systems, to which I've added various compiled stuff from the net. I have always kept the RH provided portions of my stsem updated in the manner I mentioned, and have never had a problem doing so.

YMMV.

You could just leave off the -f until you are sure you want to update the kernel. I've never had a reason not to. Again, YMMV.
