Some suggestions
Do you have a program to test memory?
Memtest86 is on the net for free. It is very good. If you have mandrake 9.1
disc 1 in images it may be found.
I also had these HD crashes and PC resets by itself.
By chance I read in a magazine that flaky memory may cause HD problems and
all sorts of unexpected crashes.
Using memtest86 within 1 minute mem locations started showing.
By trial - removing a sim (if your system allows that - older systems change
sims around - faulty addresses wil move) move around..
OK I lost 128MB sim - now even 5 hour test show no fault.
NO more HD problems NO more crashes.

Testing hardware - all depends on your setup.
1.HD 2 - what you use for - is bootable when HD 1 is removed.
2. Spare cables
3. IDE a card or onboard.
4. If linux on HD 2 you can not boot it even with bootdisk when HD 1 is
removed - you will get kernel panic.
5.Spare HD
6.Windows on HD 2 and bootable then test with scandisk or boot with win
bootdisk and use scandisk.
7. Many options if setup known.
8.Must isolate hardware where possible.
9.If your fault is intermittend - sorry - it is even worse.
