If you are having computer problems, make sure that you get the hardware 
fixed.  No OS will run well on broken hardware.

Given that...  I would check the memory as well.  
http://www.memtest86.com/ has a good program that is free.

I would turn off all DMA and other fast access modes to avoid problems.  
(You may have a DMA conflict or something else that is misbehaving.)

hdparm -d0 /dev/hda

will turn off dma on the drive.

If you know the drive is bad, get a known good drive and boot from that.  
Then mount and copy from the faulty drive.  Makes it easier if the OS does 
not get ripped out from benieth you.
