 I dunno, but it's a good idea to get the latest kernel-source rpm (2.4.20-18) 
and start over from there. It might be your problem has already been fixed.

 Also I heard people having problems when using xconfig because iirc it leaves 
old build files lying around. Try using make menuconfig instead.
