I felt the same way about linux when i very first started using it
(about a month or so ago), i knew dos and windows like the back of my
hand, but knew zilch about unix (of any kind). First thing i did
that REALLY helped was i sat down for quite a few hours and perused
(and printed out quite a few of them and stuck them in a binder) the
last 6 months or so of the mailing list archives on the redhat site
for PPP/list/install. that REALLY helped me. The next thing i did was
surf around the web (on my familiar windows machine) just gathering
and printing information. Then after i installed, i spent quite a bit
of time tryin to understand the man's (much of which to no avail). i
found the howto's, and then i found the mini howto's. at first they
confused me because they were all gzip'd.. but to solve that problem,
i cd'd to /usr/doc/HOWTO/ and typed "gunzip *" and it went and made
them all readable to me, then i read _most_ of the mini howtos, and
now i'm getting into the real HOWTO's which are often long winded and
confusing. Granted i'm not 65 (I'm 16) but i don't think age has
anything to do with it. I just recently bought "Running Linux" (a
book in the series of the O'Reilly books) it was 29.95 and it was
worth it to have it physically sitting on my desk. Also.. part of the
reason i chose to start using linux was that, the people were very
"internet community oriented" and i got the feeling that if i was in
a fix, someone could help me out.
I would definately suggest installing it.. and if worst
comes to worst, in 6 - 8 months, you decide that it absolutely isn't
for you, and you can't stand it, you reinstall windows, and give Mr.
Gates a chunk of your soul to add to his collection ;) I wouldn't
dream of going back though, even as i hobble around, i like my linux
machine better than my 95 machine at work :)
Good Luck!
