I would imagine that installing a kernel from rpm would be clutzy at best.
Kernels either need to be configured and compiled for each machine
individually, or use everything, and be bigger than all get out, or (the
better solution, if you're going to do it) use modules, but then you'd
have to include all the modules one could possibly need, or you'd have to
have the user download each one they needed...hmm..I actually don't know
how the install handles the kernel..for all I know they do use an rpm
<shrug>

Anyway, it's not that difficult to make your own kernel...go to
ftp.kernel.org, download the appropriate tarball, untar it in the /usr/src
dir (or /usr/local/src, it's a bit of a religious question with the people
I've talked to about it..it doesn't really matter imho) make it using the
instructions, don't forget about silly things like IDE or scsi drivers and
your IDE or SCSI chipset, and away you go.

oh, and assume on the first configure you'll make a mistake, and don't
blow away your own kernel before you're *positive* the new kernel works
(better yet, don't blow away your old kernel...ever..it's not *that* big
and it's good insurance -- if for whatever reason you need a kernel for
that machine, you can always boot from the rescue disks and copy it over
and do a lilo -r on it. Also, this is the way you recover if you
accidently compile a kernel missing an important option (say, the
aformentioned IDE or scsi drivers :) ) )
