In the narrowest possible terms, what ports/protocols do I need to allow outbound from a host through a firewall so that a message generated by the mail command would get through?

You will also want to either allow incomming ident traffic to your SMTP MTA,
or you will want to send connection rejected messages to ident requsts.
If you drop ident requests things may get very slow when sending outbound
mail to some places.
