I've heard it said that the Via C3 is comparable to a Celeron of 50-60% of the clock speed (in your case a 600Mhz Celeron).
My 800MHz C3 doesn't run X, it spends its time acting as mail and web server and occasional CD-burner. The rest of its idle time is spent looking for alien life (setiathome), so I can't really comment on how it would do for a desktop system.
