I have a redhat 8.0 box as a gateway/firewall for a home network using iptables. I have two NICs and eth0 which is the cable internet connection is resolved through DHCP from the ISP. I am having a recurring problem with the inability to resolve host names. I enter a DNS address into the resolv.conf file on the gateway as root and everything works fine for a while. However, within a few minutes the browser will give an error stating that the host name could not be resolved and upon checking the resolv.conf file, the DNS that I entered will no longer be listed. If I reenter the DNS address everything works fine again...until the next error. My ISP does not provide support for any OS other than Windows and they absolutely refuse to provide their DNS address. They simply state that everything is done through DHCP so that I do not need the DNS address. Consequently, I enable DHCP through eth0 but in my resolv.conf file, I am using a DNS from another ISP. Is this the source of my problem or can anyone tell me what is going on?
