The best idea is to scan it with a program called "nmap".

true, depending on what option you use for scan. if you're firewall rule has explicit denies, you might not be able to get your open port information. you might want to look at something like fragroute. what kind of firewall are you talking about? this would help little more, unless you mean just using iptables as your firewall box, etc...
