Known issue with the rpm included with the 8.0 release.
I've had much better results with the test release at:
ftp://people.redhat.com/jbj/test-4.1/

In the meantime, the following should get rpm working again:
kill -9 (any rpm or up2date processes)
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm --rebuilddb
