I did as you suggested. I deleted all the Modeline lines in both the XF86Config and XF86Config-4 files (after making backups). The results were essentially the same as before. X will start when the laptop is undocked using the built-in screen. X fails to start when the laptop is docked using the external monitor. The log file still has a bunch of messages about "Default mode ... deleted".
I looked up my monitor on the web site you gave. It's an HP A4576A montitor, with max resolution of 1600x1200, h freq of 30-107 khz and v freq of 50-160 hz. However, I don't know what to do with this information.
The monitor works with Windoze 2000, so I assume is should work with Linux if I find the right configuration. Am I correct in assuming this?
Any suggestions on what I should try next?

Next verify the Horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates, be sure your monitor can support them.
