first I'd backup the XF86 Config file .. next I would delete all
the lines in it that start with Modeline. these lines are not
required for Xfree v4. Next verify the Horizontal sync and vertical
refresh rates, be sure your monitor can support them. Most monitor
instruction manuals have the info. www.monitorworld.com also may
have it, or check the manufacturer's website for tech specs.

for reference, my 19" monitors operate at these settings:
HorizSync   30-96
VertRefresh 50-85

and I run 1600x1200 on them.
