The box is just stock RH8.0 and no X. No real need to log in on console in anything other than text mode.

I have had similar hard freezing; In my case my vendor and I have found the culprit the combo of rh8.0 + kde (or gnome); it often seems to be triggered just after the 4am cron thing. My box is an old ppro200, being readied as a file server so when it gets stable i wont be using X much on it all, except of course for severe emergency, when i may need to bring X up. The combo of old ppro bios and the graphics card tnt2 may also have something to do with the xfreeze. the only good thing about the xfreeze is i have had plenty of opportunity to see the ext3 fs recover rapidly from hitting the power switch. wow, it still seems like magic! In my case i have discovered using WindowMaker instead of Gnome or KDe gets rid of the xfreeze. if you want to try this, i set itup by: [byers@linux sysconfig]$ cat desktop DESKTOP="WINDOWMAKER" [byers@linux sysconfig]$ hth Jack _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list
