Sorry then I have not experienced this issue.  BTW I am using RHL 6.2
and mpg123 to play the songs in a random play list.  I had to logon to
the box to see what was going on since I have not messed with this in
over 6 months.  It just works.  The only time I get static is if I can;t
get enough cpu cycles.  load average sts in the .60 - .70 range without
doing anything but playing the songs.  In fact I had to use the -m
option to mpg123 to combine the L & R channels into mono and seems like
I did something special when I ripped them to reduce processing time.  I
have about 5 songs off a jazz cd that just randomly play.

I am bummed I can't be of more help.  Why did you upgrade?
