Greetings,

Yes, MS is THAT Stupid, but then again with 40+ Billion dollars in the
bank they can afford to do this.

The Office Update site does have updates for Office 97 (I have osr2 on
my Win2k box at home -- Rapidly being replaced by OpenOffice 1.0 BTW).
However the useful auto detection that Office 2000/XP/11 have is not
supported for Office 97. MS did this, you guessed it, to give the user
an incentive to upgrade their stuff to the latest and greatest.

To get the Office 97 stuff (they haven't released ANYTHING for this
product in YEARS) you would have to manually select that product type
from the menu they give you.

Also, I have seen lately, due to the rash of IE vulns, that MS has
started requiring that you REMOVE your Security protections to even GET
the updates that will fix a vuln... In some cases, a certain fix, means
you have to turn OFF the very thing that you would need to get the
update...

I know that MS takes a lot of heat, and to be sure (like turning off any
services your servers don't ABSOLUTELY need) their products do require
tinkering, but I have NEVER had any of these problems with Netscape,
Opera, Mozilla, et al.

I only use IE for updating the PC's here at work, and even that is
getting replaced by other methods (as time and money allow).

Now if I can just get my users to stop using IE.....

LOL....... I then used IE and got this:

Sorry!
The Product Updates site supports Office 2000 and Office XP only
In order to take advantage of the update detection service provided by
the
Product Updates site, you need to have Office 2000 or Office XP
installed
on your machine. For updates to earlier versions of Office please go to
the
<../Downloads/default.htm>Office Download Center.

Are they a great rip off or what. really earn their trusted reputation!
