I've even removed the line giving permission to mount to /disk, and just left it as /disk/export and exportfs -a still complains about machine2 mounting to disk even though that line is not in the exports file anymore.
Restart nfs....seriously. --
i then added /disk back in, restarted nfs and mounted ok. I then added /disk/export back in and that worked also. So for now i'll leave it that way. The odd thing is this setup has worked fine for months without a problem. But since it does seem to be causing a problem no, i'll look for a different solution.
