That sounds a little strange, this should only have had problems with
the window manager, in the case some version of fvwm.

As far as X not starting as a non-root user, have you installed the
new xserver-wrapper which runs suid, or set the X server suid ?

The wrapper should be in the updates to redhat-5.0, however if you are
running an older version, just make the server, which ever one you 
use, suid. Such as:

-rws--x--x   1 root     root      2516780 Nov  5 10:52 XF86_SVGA

or wherever server your link in /etc/X11/X points.
