I did not set up the ppp server on the Linux 5 box server. Another guy did
that and he is no longer working here. HOWTO mainly addresses client ppp
and not server ppp.
You need a line in etc/inittab referring to serial port and a getty such as
ours: "S2:345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty ttyS2" "S2" is the configured serial
port name. I don't know what "345" represents. Then in
etc/mgetty+sendfax/mgetty.config put a line under remark set local fax
station "fax-id (your dial in number)". Then under remark access modes put
a line "speed (of your modem)" and a line underneath "port ttyS2 speed
(speed of your modem)". Then go to another file in same directory
"login.config" and uncomment or add line under samples remarks "/FIDO/ uucp
fido /usr/local/lib/fnet/ifcico @". And under automatic ppp remarks
uncomment or add line "/AutoPPP/ - a_ppp /usr/sbin/pppd auth +pap
:(your IP address) proxyarp". At the end of the file is a line I do not
understand "* - - /bin/login @
Go to etc/ppp/options. File should include in one column asyncmap 0,
netmask (followed by your netmask), proxyarp, lock, crtscts, modem, name
(followed by name of your computer).
Got to same directory "pap-secrets". Under "client" column put your
computer name. Under "server" put name of ppp account which is anything you
want. Under secret put anything you want.
Assuming your modem is configured, dial in and use the ppp account name and
secret name to login and you are surfing the LAN and or NET. Let me know
how it goes. I may not have provided all the settings but this could get
you on your way. I do not know what half of these settings mean. Others
could clarify hopefully but this works nicely using Win95 Dial Up Networking.
