Here is the message that was left to explain why nothing is appearing 
in this directory.  Found in ftp://sunsite.usc.edu/pub/NOTICE

  We are having some rather serious disk problems from time to time --
If you cannot find /pub/Linux, or any other part of our ftp site, it
is most likely that we're having problems mounting the disk - we will
NOT be moving or discontinuing anything.

  We hope to have these problems resolved shortly, and apologize for
any inconvenience.
