Peter,
Put the following line in your ~/.bash_profile
set -o vi
Then either log out and back in, or issue the command
. ~/.bash_profile
and away you go....

More info,
while in vi, hit the F1 (Function 1) key for help in vi/vim
then :q to get out of the help function.
