Set your $LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to the correct lib and your done.

I don't think so. All the functionality you had in 4.2 is still available
in 5.0, and there are quite a few more packages in 5.0 than in 4.2.

So the bad news is that the new packages (or packages that _are_ being
updated) won't run on your 4.2 system, because the old libraries are dead,
and the increase in security, stablity, and features far outweigh the few
programs that no one uses, so aren't being updated.
How come you didn't complain when RH switched to ELF?
