It is entirely possible to run libc5 programs on RH 5.0 systems. In fact,
it is possible with the default installation, which installs libc5. It is
also possible to upgrade to glibc without RH 5.0 and keep compatibility
with libc5 programs (for example, when I installed glibc, netscape was
still compiled to use libc5, and it still worked). The only thing you
have to do is make sure that you have your dynamic linker configured
properly. It is even possible to still support libc4 (a.out) programs.

This happens (not quite the way you describe, but the linker runs libc5
programs with libc5, and glibc programs with glibc).
