PRELUDE:
Biologists routinely produce and freeze hundreds of samples, bacterial
strains, plasmids, primers, tissue samples ..... Each freezer holds several
hundred samples. Until now we have recorded the position and identity of
the samples in a catalogue. The catalogue is full of illegible hand
writting and inaccurate data.
Each member of the department has his/her own list of his/her own samples
in his/her own format.
Here is what I would like to do. Create a simple flat line ascii database
allowing each user to enter the data delimited with a common deliminter in
his/her own style. Each sample will be given a file name based on its
position in the freeze/fridge ie., f1d2ivva9. In the file will contain the
necessary data. Perl will do all the text matching and return the file
name(position) and contents of the file. Moving/deleting samples will be no
more difficult than mv -filename -filename and rm -filename PLUS I get to
use Unix file permissions.
QUESTION:
I would like to throw up a web interface to this simple program. A user
should be able to search for samples, add samples, and if owner -
move/delete samples. Any linux friendly suggestions ? Easy quick java
packet for linux, HTML, XML .... ???
P.S thanks for all the support I have recieved from this group. A program
created using perl and pstricks to create phylogeny diagrams has been a
great success among neighbouring departments. I couldn't have done it
without your support :)
