Hmm, didn't seem to work. I still am presented with a Windows NT/Windows
98 boot menu. 

I booted from the install disks as you suggested, mounted /dev/hdb1 on
/mnt (this drive is dedicated to Linux, Hda1 is NT/98).

Now, I tried a couple of things. First, I tried your command, then I
tried some variations of it, but nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions?
