If you must have ICQ, then there is a platform independent JavaICQ.  I
set
it up and ran it a couple of times in OS/2 (just to try it out...but I
don't like,
nor use, IRC nor any other form of chat).  You have to do a little
editing of 
the program file to fit your system but if you have JDK 1.1* it works
fine
whether under OS/2, Linux (presumably), or Windoze.
