Having your main parition crash just once will give you the answer to this
question. If home is on a separate partition and the main partition gets
fried, re-installing is not as painful. You just re-format and install on
the main partition and it will leave the accounts in /home alone (no pun
intended).

I would definitely recommend a separate home (if nothing else). Especially
if you are new to linux, and will more than likely have to go through the
install process more than once. It is nice to not have to re-format the
whole disk more than once.
